They were founded in 1971 and began as the New Englad Whalers a team that competed in the World Hockey Association. The Whalers franchise joined the NHl in 1979 when the WHA merged with the NHL. They became the Hartford Whalers when the merger happened. Later in 1997 the team moved to North Carolina and rebranded as the Hurricnes.
